Claude

Anthropic's AI we reach for when reasoning and safety lead.

Claude is a family of large language models built by Anthropic, an AI safety company. The models understand and generate natural language and are designed with a strong focus on careful reasoning, following instructions and behaving safely. HDC uses Claude to build assistants, draft content and run automations for clients where nuanced reasoning, reliable instruction-following and trustworthy output matter most.

Where it shines

  • Strong at careful, multi-step reasoning over nuanced or detailed material
  • Built by a safety-focused company, with a focus on trustworthy, honest output
  • Follows detailed instructions and brand guidelines closely and consistently
  • Large context window handles long documents and full briefs in one go
  • A clean API makes it straightforward to embed in the sites and tools we build
  • Excellent for drafting on-brand content a human then reviews and approves

Trade-offs to weigh

  • Like any LLM it can still make mistakes, so output needs review and guardrails
  • Third-party API, so data handling needs care for privacy and GDPR
  • Usage-based pricing needs monitoring as conversation volume grows
  • Overkill for simple, fixed-answer tasks a basic form would handle

What Claude is

Claude is a family of large language models built by Anthropic, an AI company founded with safety as its central mission. Like other LLMs, Claude is trained to understand and generate natural language: it can answer questions, follow instructions, summarise long documents, classify information and write in a given style. What distinguishes it is the emphasis on careful reasoning, reliable instruction-following and safe, honest behaviour, Anthropic builds and tunes the models specifically to be trustworthy.

For our work that focus is the point. A lot of client tasks aren’t “answer a quick FAQ”, they’re “understand a detailed brief, apply the right rule, and respond accurately without going off-script.” That’s where a model designed to reason carefully and stick to instructions earns its place.

How HDC uses Claude

We use Claude where reasoning quality, instruction-following and safety lead the requirements:

  • Assistants for nuanced services. When a business has a complex, conditional service list, we brief a Claude-powered assistant on the full document and rely on its reasoning to apply the right answer to the right visitor.
  • On-brand content drafting. Given a client’s brand guidelines and examples, Claude drafts copy that follows the voice and rules closely, always as a first draft for a human to review and approve.
  • Automations over detail. Claude’s large context window lets it work across long documents in one pass, which suits summarising, extracting and classifying tasks inside an automation.
  • Guardrailed deployment. Whatever we build, it’s scoped to the business, bounded on what it can say, and set to hand off to a human when something falls outside its remit.

Why we apply it

Not every AI task is simple, and a model that fumbles nuance creates more work than it saves, confused enquiries, off-brand copy, answers that need unpicking. When the job leans on careful reasoning or close adherence to a brief, a stronger, safety-focused model means cleaner results the first time: enquiries that are correctly qualified, content that genuinely sounds like the client, automations we can trust to behave.

It also reflects how we think about AI generally, useful, but kept on a leash. A safety-first model and a human-in-the-loop process let clients get the benefits of AI without the risk of it saying something wrong, off-brand or unsafe in their name.

How Claude fits our stack

Claude is one of two AI engines we build on alongside OpenAI; we choose between them per project based on the task. Whichever powers an assistant, it lives on a site built in Astro, and its output connects outward through Zapier and Make to the client’s CRM, inbox and Brevo for email follow-up. So a Claude-qualified lead or a Claude-drafted message flows into the same automated pipeline as everything else, reasoned by the model, then acted on by the team’s existing tools.

When Claude isn’t the right tool

For simple, fixed-answer needs, a short FAQ, a basic enquiry form, any LLM is overkill, and we’ll recommend the simplest thing that works rather than adding AI for its own sake. Where a task is better suited to OpenAI’s models, or where cost or a specific integration tips the balance, we’ll use those instead. And as with any AI, anything that must be exact or legally binding, quotes, contractual terms, compliance wording, is collected and routed to a human, never improvised by the model.

Worked example

An assistant that reasons over a detailed services brief

Picture a property-maintenance firm with a wide, fiddly service list, different rules for landlords, tenants and homeowners, and jobs they take on versus refer out. A simple chatbot would fumble the nuance. We brief a Claude-powered assistant on the full document; its strong instruction-following and reasoning let it tell a tenant from a landlord, apply the right policy, decline jobs that are out of scope honestly, and capture the right details for the ones that fit. The team gets cleanly qualified enquiries instead of confused ones, and the assistant stays on message because it sticks to the brief. (Illustrative, every build is scoped to your goals.)

Claude: your questions answered

What is Claude?

Claude is a family of large language models made by Anthropic, an AI company focused on safety. Like other LLMs it understands and generates natural language, answering questions, following instructions, summarising and writing, but it's designed with particular emphasis on careful reasoning and behaving safely and honestly.

How does HDC use Claude for clients?

We use Claude to power assistants, draft on-brand content and run automations, especially where the task needs nuanced reasoning or close adherence to a detailed brief. A typical use is a website assistant that handles a complex service list accurately, or a content workflow that drafts copy in a client's voice for a human to review and approve.

What's the difference between Claude and OpenAI's GPT?

Both are capable large language models we build with. In practice we reach for Claude when a task leans on careful, multi-step reasoning, close instruction-following or stricter safety, and for long documents that fit its large context. We use OpenAI's models widely too, the right choice depends on the job, and we pick per project.

Why does HDC use Claude?

Because some client work demands more than a quick answer, it needs an assistant that reasons carefully, follows a detailed brief, stays on brand and behaves safely. Claude is built by a safety-focused company for exactly that, which makes it our pick when reliability and trustworthy output matter most.

Is Claude safe and accurate enough to use on my site?

Claude is designed with safety as a priority, but like any AI it isn't infallible. We build with guardrails, scoping it to your business, setting clear boundaries, and handing off to a human for anything exact or out of remit, and we keep a person in the loop for content before it's published.

Can Claude write content in my brand voice?

Yes, it's one of its strengths. Given clear brand guidelines and examples, Claude drafts copy that follows your tone and rules closely. We always treat that as a first draft for human review and approval, never as something published unchecked.
